Decaffeinated…15/05/2014
Nightshift over, go home and sleep mate, then get your gear sorted for the drive down to Swanage tomorrow, take it easy, have a quiet day, rest up. Sun’s shining, tide’s right, got to go, got to go now…Corton it is; run home, grab clothing and bait – everything else is in the car – no time for coffee, just tough it out. Back through town, up to the car park, unload, down to the beach, looks great, bit swelly but otherwise fine and what a glorious morning…paddle out, drop anchor about there somewhere. Whole squid mostly with some herring to try as well, after smoothound and maybe roker…time to get those two on the kayak for the year…oh yeah, take the Warbird 220’s and try for some length to begin this month’s tally for the tournament…
Anchor down, baits down, sit back and enjoy the rolling swells, 2-3 foot mostly. Tap tap tap; strike. Starting almost straight away with a puppy dog…
Second species, a whiting. Keeper, but back to lay its eggs. A second follows, bigger, but I don’t need them right now.
Next up, a good pull in this tide and it’s a doggie, a nice scrap that I thought was a bigger fish…and then another, measuring 62cm.
A decent length but Shaun was on 90cm with a thornback so I’d best get a hound asap. A kiss for luck and a hug because it’s so sweet and of fit went strongly to lay some more eggs.
The next fish was a surprise, a codling. Bang on 35cm, the minimum landing size – ludicrous, it’s mostly head. Back it went.
A 40cm follows, still not worth killing. A bit late for these here.
The tiredness is kicking in and I start laughing, singing, telling jokes, speaking in strange accents and just going more and more bizarre as time goes on.
Slack comes and I pull anchor before heading in. Another fun session. Just time to go check my pots en-route to home and get some more crustaceans for the fridge; Both in size at 100mm and 160mm (correct carapace measurements)
