Catching Crusties…13 & 14 & 15 & 16/05/2014
Well following my nice haul of 42-46cm bass on my first bass session of the year I was left, after giving away one (whole) to a temporary landlubber and one (filleted) my dad with six frames. That’s heads, skeletons and tails. I don’t like wastage of things I’ve caused the death of so when I can make use of things like this I do…cue my collapsible Fladen pots again!
So, a few days of wind and rough weather and then my wife slings the whole lot from fridge to garden and I take the hint; get wet. I paddled out, drop two pots by the rocks marked by milk bottles and paddle home…nice day to be out and with a brisk run up and down against wind one way and tide the other it was a good workout to start the day, followed by a brief surf in.
First lift the next day…
Oh my, a lovely big brown crab to eat and a prawn to put in the aquarium…second pot just has small shore and velvet crabs plus two hermits and a prawn for the tank, nice ones. I raced home, surfed in and had the crab photographed by two ladies chatting me up on the beach…
Second lift…
A nice lobster and a nice brown crab, one in one pot, one in the other with an undersized lobster with one claw – only a midget. No prawns today…race back, surf in and home again…slat in pot, water in pot, cooked up and in the fridge. A large pot and it’s filled hurrah!
Third lift…
Got to be quick, I’m straight back from a night shift and need to lift the pot, cook the catch, bath, finish loading and get down to Felixstowe to garry’s and then down to Swanage on the south coast before falling asleep. Full-pelt paddle north, lift one; biggest brown crab yet, plus a bunch of smaller ones; two legal but they’ll grow for another day plus some smaller, plus shore and edibles in the first pot. Second pot – a hermit, another keeper brown crab and some juveniles, plus shore and velvet crabs too. Pots emptied out of bait for a free meal and it’s straight back home at full speed with a superb little surf in. Only small waves but carving, cutting back and then back onto the face. I come off the wave, paddle back up and in closer to the ramp; time to go, these are needed for bait and food down in Swanage!
So that’s my free fruits de mer for the week; pity I had to leave it for wife / daughter / daughter / mother / father but hey, that’s nice to do too and I had KFC!
