Slater’s Pit? No, Slater’s (insert rhyme)...12/08/2013
Slaters, a park lake in town, small but perfectly formed with carp and pike to twenty pound, tench and rudd, perch and roach…I wanted tench, perhaps I’d get lucky on a carp too. I’ve only fished here once before, on my Yakboard as it’s that small, and blanked with fish topping all around. That was years ago and early morning; now to go at night in the Tetra.I had a bit of light left though, the last hour or so. Pretty place.
Fish topping everywhere, tench bubbles everywhere, carp moving around, roach jumping…I sat there with a redstick telescopic rod. A bit heavy at 25-50g but I wanted to put it through its paces to see if it was worthy of a hiding place in my wife’s car…
I sat there feeding sweetcorn, baiting with double corn and had to change from leger to float due to the weed. Did they want to know? No. I called Paul and he popped down with his dad to take the mickey and fish from the bank as the sun set…there was something good to come out of it.
I fished on, failed, biteless and then the water started to calm down. Paul was chucking a lure and missed two takes and we had a good natter before it was time to depart. Fishless. I think I’ll try again though.
