Scoping Out A Biggun?...13/08/2013
Back home from my adventures in public nudity and warmed once more with coffee and a hot bath I realised that I was, once again and unsurprisingly, quite bored. Might as well go fishing then! I started sorting out some freshwater gear and picked up the Redstick telescopic that had arrived and decided to give that a whirl on the sweetcorn, maybe get a decent chub on the end of it. Things were all going swimmingly when my brother called and I had to divert for an hour to go see my parents with some more flowers for mum whose year has been somewhat upsetting.
Anyway, that was that and that was done and I headed to Ellingham, chatting to a nice fella with a fly rod and then his son before getting on the water an hour or so after I’d hoped. No matter. I moved to the usual spot, chucked in a handful of Green Giant, baited up a size 6 with double sweetcorn and chucked it in.
Nowhere near as much movement as previous evenings and the water was quite a bit higher but finally a twitch and a pull and…I struck poorly. I repeated this ten minutes later; this was totally the wrong rod for this sort of fishing. Never mind, that was the experimentation taken care of. Well, almost; I then struck while inadvertently snagged and snapped my hooklength off. In fact it took ages before my first fish, a glorious rudd.
I managed a couple of these before the chub started; a fine one followed by a larger one and then they too went quiet.
Midges everywhere. Bugs all around and with the lack of bites, the missed fish, the general dampness and the late start all put me in mind to go home and sleep ready for the morning’s drive north so after a while I decided on a last cast…
…bang! Rod tip wrenched over, fish runs off, strike, good fish, another one of them big chub…hehe…snap.
Kebab o’ clock.
