No B Goby and an off-cuff recce…23/06/13

With all the excitement of a weekend pond-dipping and bank flicking I decided to head off, once the kids were in bed, to try and catch a goby. Another of my inch-long species these put up an awesome fight and have a tendency to tow the kayak around, snap rods and put the fear of God into any angler. That’s why gnomes and Jeremy Fisher were never depicted hunting them. Maybe. So down to lake Lothing I went, launched and headed for the usual shallow, sand and gravel spot where I’ve been a few times each year. Stiff breeze, blew me about a bit but I managed to get settled and peered into the water. “Photobucket” Nothing. Tide was right up too. I would have expected them here by now, perhaps they stay lower down in the low water area? I tried for a while then headed off to look for mullet after stirring the bottom up to see if it could bring some in. “Photobucket” Mullet. Madness. Ten minutes and I decided that I wasn’t going to risk my sanity tonight. So back to the goby spot for a look see and another try. “Photobucket” I was wasting my time. I’d spent maybe an hour paddling and fishing all-in but decided it wasn’t worth pursuing. Then a Plan B occurred…a recce to Slater’s Pit! I’m liking the idea of launching into silly places for a while now, places not really big enough for the kayak and this, one I’d fished once years ago, is a corker! Tench and carp in there and it’s only small. Okay so I’d blanked that time (I’m not a tench/carp angler, clueless on them I am and have never had the former) but it had to be worthy of a repeat, five years on…that was then… “Photobucket” “Photobucket” This was now (atrocious grammar)… “Photobucket” I drove across town, took the rod and some maggots and wandered down to the bank. Casting in and observing through the light from my headtorch I saw no sign of life other than a couple of ducks. I tried a second swim and then lost interest; another hour gone but it’s feasible to get in there with the yak still and people do fish it so it’s worthwhile; just need to stick some groundbait in and use a more suitable bait…to be continued…
